In the early morning hours of August 15, 2020, a scene of chaos and violence erupted in the parking lot of the Pike County Cattleman's Complex in Troy, Alabama, leaving two men dead and several others wounded. Devonta James Givens, a 25-year-old Black male from Troy, was among those who lost their lives in the tragic shooting. The incident occurred at approximately 2 a.m.
as a large crowd was dispersing after a rap concert held at the venue.
As officers were en route to assist with the crowd, multiple gunshots rang out. Upon their arrival, they discovered a harrowing scene with multiple victims. Givens was rushed to Troy Regional Medical Center, but he succumbed to his injuries shortly after arrival. Another victim, 25-year-old Jhakyndall Johnson, also of Troy, was transported to a Dothan hospital where he later died. Three other individuals were also injured in the shooting.
The investigation that followed involved multiple law enforcement agencies, including the Troy Police Department, the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency, and the Pike County Sheriff's Office. Their collective efforts led to the identification of a suspect. On September 4, 2020, 24-year-old Roderick Talferio Roberson Jr. of Troy was arrested in Rockdale County, Georgia, by members of the United States Marshals Service and the local sheriff's department.
Roberson was subsequently extradited back to Alabama to face legal proceedings. He was charged with one count of capital murder in connection with the shooting that claimed the lives of Givens and Johnson. Following his return to Troy, he was processed at the city jail and then held at the Pike County Jail without bond.
