On a summer evening in Troy, Alabama, the life of 23-year-old Aquantis Kendarrel Thomas, a Black male, was tragically cut short in a violent sequence of events that left two men dead before the gunman took his own life. The incident began to unfold around 10:25 p.m. on Sunday, July 20, 2025, on the 100 block of New Street, creating a scene of confusion and sorrow that would soon ripple through the community.
The initial report to the Troy Police Department was of a man lying in the road.
Upon their arrival at 10:31 p.m., officers discovered a man who had been fatally shot. As they were securing the scene, their attention was drawn to a nearby residence where a second victim, later identified as 42-year-old Christopher C. Stanford of Ozark, was found deceased inside from a gunshot wound. Investigators determined that the suspect had forcibly entered the home and shot Stanford.
Following the shooting inside the residence, the assailant, identified as 23-year-old Johnathan Rayvon Williams of Troy, encountered Aquantis Thomas. Thomas was sitting in a gray Nissan Altima parked near the home. Williams shot Thomas, then removed him from the vehicle and fled the scene in the car. The search for the stolen vehicle did not last long; it was soon located on North Three Notch Street near Needmore Road.
Inside the abandoned Nissan Altima, law enforcement found Williams in the driver's seat, deceased from what was later confirmed to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound. The investigation into the double murder-suicide is ongoing, with the Troy Police Department working in conjunction with the Pike County District Attorney's Office, the Pike County Sheriff's Office, and the Pike County Coroner's Office. At this time, a motive for the shootings remains unknown, and authorities have not found any prior connection between Williams and his victims, Aquantis Thomas and Christopher Stanford.
