On July 2, 1905, Officer William Amslom "Billy" Baber of the Decatur Police Department lost his life in the line of duty. The incident occurred when Officer Baber responded to a call for assistance from another officer, W.M. Moore, who had taken two suspects into custody in front of the railroad depot on Railroad Street N.E. in Decatur. During the arrest, one of the subjects managed to escape while Officer Moore was searching the other suspect.
