In the early morning hours of Saturday, June 14, 2025, the life of 27-year-old Akera Harris, a female, was tragically cut short in Decatur, Alabama. Police responded to reports of a shooting in the 1600 block of West Moulton Street at approximately 3:20 a.m. Upon arrival, they discovered Harris deceased at the scene from a gunshot wound.
The investigation quickly led authorities to a suspect, 32-year-old Ronald Bland.
A warrant for murder was issued for his arrest, and he was located and taken into custody by the Huntsville Police Department later that same day. Bland was then transferred to the custody of the Decatur Police Department and booked into the Morgan County Jail. Initially, he was held without bond under Aniah's Law.
Subsequent court proceedings revealed a complex and heart-wrenching dynamic to the case: Akera Harris and Ronald Bland were described as best friends. Despite the serious charge, Bland was granted a $50,000 bond. His release came with several conditions, including wearing a GPS tracking device and reporting for pre-trial supervision. However, while out on bond, Bland reportedly violated the terms of his release by failing two drug tests and breaking GPS monitoring rules. Despite these violations, a decision was made to release him from custody again after being fitted with a new GPS monitor.
The circumstances surrounding the shooting, as described in reports, suggest a chaotic scene outside of a nightclub. Witnesses claimed to have seen Bland fire a weapon into a crowd, which resulted in Harris's death. Bland's family and friends have publicly asserted his innocence, stating he did not have a gun and that Harris may have been shot while trying to protect him during an altercation. His mother suggested that her son, not being from Decatur, was an easy person for law enforcement to target.
Akera Harris was a 2017 graduate of Decatur High School and a devoted mother to her young daughter. Her mother described her as a loving and sweet person, and expressed her profound grief and confusion, particularly given the close relationship between her daughter and the accused. While she does not believe Bland is a bad person or that the shooting was intentional, she recounted a conversation with him after the incident in which he claimed he could not remember what happened.
