Deputy Sheriff Henry C. Vaughan, aged 54, though reported as 53 in some accounts, was fatally shot on the night of December 18, 1931, in Nyota, Alabama, which is three miles east of Hayden. The incident occurred when Vaughan attempted to search the car of Sam Hays for whisky.
