When police in Troy, Alabama, responded to a reported vehicle crash shortly after 10 p.m. on Sunday, September 3, 2023, they found a scene more complex than expected. In the 600 block of Pine Street, an older model pickup truck had left the road and struck an embankment. The driver, 35-year-old Quinta Dionne Maddox, a Black man and resident of Troy, was found inside in critical condition. Before being rushed to a hospital, Mr. Maddox was able to tell first responders that he had been shot.
He was transported to Troy Regional Medical Center, where he later died from his injuries.
The revelation that Mr. Maddox had been shot turned the crash scene into a homicide investigation. Detectives soon located a crime scene at Maddox’s home, which was on the same block where his truck was found. The investigation revealed that Maddox and his wife, Tyiesha Renee Pollard, had been involved in a domestic incident shortly before he was shot. Based on evidence gathered at the scene, police arrested Pollard, 41, and charged her with the murder of her husband. She was transported to the Pike County Jail and held without bond.
During legal proceedings, Pollard claimed that her husband was shot during a domestic altercation. However, according to the Pike County District Attorney's office, evidence presented at trial contradicted her account. Investigators found no signs of a fight inside the couple’s home, and Pollard had no marks or injuries that would suggest a physical attack. An autopsy determined that Mr. Maddox had been shot twice: once in the leg and once in the back. The fatal back wound, which went through his abdomen, was not a close-contact wound and was fired from a distance, a finding inconsistent with Pollard’s story.
In October 2026, a Pike County jury reviewed the evidence and found Tyiesha Renee Pollard guilty of the murder of Quinta Dionne Maddox. After the verdict, the district attorney said he hoped the family could now "close this chapter of the book and hopefully be able to remember the good times they had with their loved one." Pollard was scheduled to be sentenced in November 2026.
