In the fall of 2015, a dispute on an Anniston, Alabama street ended in the tragic death of 17-year-old Broderick Taylor Jr. The Black/African American male was fatally shot in the chest on the evening of October 30, 2015. The incident occurred around 10:30 p.m. on West 15th Street, where an altercation between Taylor and 25-year-old Jerald Bailey had escalated.
Witnesses stated that during the confrontation, Bailey produced a firearm and shot Taylor multiple times.
Following the shooting, Taylor was rushed to a local hospital, but he ultimately succumbed to his injuries. The shooter, Jerald Bailey, fled the scene immediately after the incident. However, he surrendered to law enforcement at the Calhoun County Jail the following morning. Bailey was subsequently arrested and faced a charge of murder.
In September 2017, Jerald Bailey's case went to trial. After a four-day proceeding, a jury convicted him of the lesser charge of manslaughter. The court sentenced Bailey to life in prison for his role in Taylor's death. Reports on his parole eligibility differ, with one source indicating the possibility of parole after 15 years, while another states he would not be eligible due to prior felony convictions. The untimely death of Broderick Taylor Jr. deeply impacted his family, including his older brother, Kwon Alexander, a linebacker in the National Football League. In honor of his younger brother, Alexander established the Broderick Taylor II Foundation in 2016.
