Officer J. O. Hammett, a 40-year-old member of the Childersburg Police Department in Alabama, tragically lost his life on December 1, 1942. The incident occurred in a restaurant where Officer Hammett and his colleague, Officer G.A. DeLoach, were present. The proprietor of the restaurant became enraged and shot both officers.
