On December 30, 1942, Acting Chief of Police George Albert DeLoach, Sr., aged 55, was fatally shot in Childersburg, Alabama. The incident occurred in a local restaurant where DeLoach and Officer J.O. Hammett were present. The restaurant's proprietor became enraged when DeLoach warned one of the patrons to leave town or face incarceration. In response, the proprietor opened fire, killing both officers.
