On December 30, 1942, Acting Chief of Police George Albert DeLoach, Sr., aged 55, was fatally shot in Childersburg, Alabama. The incident occurred in a local restaurant where DeLoach and Officer J.O. Hammett were present. The restaurant's proprietor became enraged when DeLoach warned one of the patrons to leave town or face incarceration.
