In the early hours of May 12, 2014, the life of 29-year-old Steven Tawan Twymon, an African American man from Childersburg, Alabama, was tragically cut short. The incident unfolded at a pool hall on Third Street in his hometown around 1:00 a.m. An ongoing feud, reportedly spanning over a year and centered around a woman, escalated into a fatal confrontation.
Steven was fatally shot in the midsection with a 12-gauge shotgun and was pronounced dead at the scene.
Investigators quickly identified a suspect, 26-year-old Clifton Garynell Roberson of Vincent, Alabama. Shortly after the shooting, Roberson was apprehended and charged with murder. He was subsequently held in the Talladega County Jail.
The legal proceedings that followed brought a resolution to the case in August 2015. Just before his trial was set to begin, Clifton Garynell Roberson entered a guilty plea for the murder of Steven Twymon. A circuit judge sentenced him to 26 years in prison for the crime.
Steven, a 2003 graduate of Childersburg High School, was remembered as a member of the New Maryland Baptist Church, which he had joined at a young age. His death left a void in the lives of his family, including his son, parents, and siblings, who mourned the untimely loss of a loved one to gun violence.
