On a cold winter day in 1947, a dedicated law enforcement officer, 32-year-old male Agent Leroy H. 'Shorty' Thomas of the Alabama Alcoholic Beverage Control Board, was involved in a fatal encounter. The incident unfolded on January 3, near Sayreton, Alabama, following a vehicle pursuit that began in Coalburg and ended in the Birmingham area. Thomas and his fellow agents had stopped a vehicle they suspected was being used to transport illegal whiskey.
