On January 3, 1947, Agent Leroy H. "Shorty" Thomas of the Alabama Alcoholic Beverage Control Board was fatally shot during a vehicle stop near Sayreton, Alabama. The incident occurred after an automobile chase between Coalburg and Birmingham, during which Thomas and fellow agents stopped a vehicle suspected of transporting illegal whiskey.
