John Dickerson Newby, an officer of the Birmingham Police Department, succumbed to his injuries on October 15, 1919. The incident that led to his death occurred on October 10, 1919, when he was shot in a dark alley. Newby had responded to the sound of shots in the area and was subsequently injured in the gunfire.
