In the late evening hours of Saturday, September 3, 2022, Marquse Terrail Yarbrough, a 25-year-old male, was fatally shot in Birmingham, Alabama. The incident occurred at approximately 9:20 p.m. in the 100 block of 3rd Avenue West, within the Elyton Village housing community. When officers from the Birmingham Police Department's North Precinct arrived on the scene, responding to multiple ShotSpotter alerts that detected over thirty rounds being fired, they discovered a scene of chaos.
Mr. Yarbrough and another man, 24-year-old Jamarcus 'Jalen' Tolbert, were found lying in the roadway with severe gunshot wounds. A third man was located inside a nearby apartment, also suffering from a gunshot wound, while a fourth victim later arrived at UAB Hospital by a private vehicle. All four victims were transported to the hospital for medical treatment. Despite the efforts of medical staff, both Marquse Terrail Yarbrough and Jamarcus Tolbert succumbed to their injuries and were pronounced deceased. The other two victims sustained non-life-threatening injuries and survived.
The preliminary investigation into the deadly shooting suggests that a verbal altercation involving at least one of the victims preceded the gunfire.
