Sergeant Albert Eugene Ballard, a 47-year-old officer with the Birmingham Police Department, was fatally shot on Thursday, November 29, 1979. At the time of his death, Ballard was just two days away from being eligible for retirement. The incident occurred in downtown Birmingham at the intersection of 2nd Avenue and 19th Street North.
