On May 24, 1911, 34-year-old Constable William Lewis Staggs of Jefferson County, Alabama, was fatally ambushed while returning home from work. As he rode his mule along a path near the Bessie Mines, he was shot with buckshot and succumbed to his injuries at the scene. His body was discovered the following day, with his mule grazing nearby.
