On the evening of August 29, 2019, in Birmingham, Alabama, 78-year-old Louis Zicarelli, a Caucasian male, was fatally shot inside his home. The incident occurred at approximately 9:30 p.m. in the Roebuck Springs community. Responding to a report of a person shot, officers from the East Precinct arrived at the residence on 9th Court Circle South to find Zicarelli unresponsive in the front room with an apparent gunshot wound.
Birmingham Fire and Rescue personnel and the Jefferson County Coroner arrived and pronounced him dead at the scene.
Investigators learned that Zicarelli had been shot after answering a knock at his front door. His wife was present in the home at the time of the shooting but was not physically harmed. Following the shooting, Zicarelli's car was stolen. The investigation into the homicide led Birmingham police detectives to identify a suspect.
On September 11, Vestavia Hills police pursued the stolen vehicle and apprehended the driver, identified as 18-year-old Eric Kindred. Birmingham police subsequently issued warrants for Kindred, charging him with capital murder, theft of property, and burglary. It was discovered that Kindred lived in the same neighborhood as the Zicarellis. Police reported that prior to the fatal shooting, Kindred had burglarized the Zicarelli home earlier that same day and had stolen the family's car. Kindred was taken into custody and held in the Jefferson County Jail. In March 2020, a Jefferson County grand jury indicted Eric Kindred on the charge of capital murder for the death of Louis Zicarelli. He was also indicted on charges of burglary and theft of property.
