In the course of his duties on a Sunday, October 7, 1973, Birmingham Police Officer Felix Underwood was investigating a traffic accident when his life was tragically cut short. While at the scene, a person described as emotionally disturbed unexpectedly entered Officer Underwood's patrol car and fatally shot him. This sudden act of violence ended the life of a dedicated public servant and military veteran.
The male officer had previously served in the United States Navy.
The individual responsible for Officer Underwood's death was apprehended. It was later discovered that this person had committed a murder prior to the encounter with Officer Underwood. Following the legal process, the shooter was not sent to a conventional prison but was instead remanded to a mental institution for a period of 10 years.
