On January 12, 1974, 20-year-old Jimmy Earl Berry, a student at the University of North Alabama, was working as an assistant manager at a McDonald's restaurant in Muscle Shoals, Alabama. After the restaurant closed at midnight, Berry remained to complete his closing duties. At approximately 3:00 a.m., a janitor arrived and discovered a side door unlocked and the safe open.
