In the spring of 2020, a shooting in Florence, Alabama, claimed the life of 43-year-old Nathan 'Nub' Bevis. The incident, which unfolded on April 6th, prompted a significant police response that culminated in a lengthy standoff and a second death.
That Monday morning, Florence police were called to the scene of an 'assault with a firearm' on Plum Street. There they discovered Bevis, who had been fatally shot.
Investigators quickly identified a suspect, described as a Black male who was seen leaving the area on a bicycle.
The search for the suspect led officers to a nearby location where the man had concealed himself. A tense standoff ensued, lasting for approximately four hours. According to the Florence Police Chief, officers engaged in negotiations with the armed man, who was also reportedly threatening self-harm. The situation escalated dramatically when the suspect issued an ultimatum and then opened fire on the officers. The police returned fire, and the suspect was killed at the scene. Fortunately, no police officers were injured during the exchange.
