On April 29, 2016, 77-year-old Charles Hugh Perkins, a retired corrections officer, was fatally shot at his residence on Redbud Street in Florence, Alabama. The Florence Police Department responded to the incident and subsequently charged 32-year-old Alfonso Ramon Jarmon with Perkins' murder.
Perkins had a distinguished career in law enforcement, serving as a police officer in Chicago, Illinois, and in Florence and Sheffield, Alabama. He also worked as a corrections officer in Florence
