On March 23, 1992, 58-year-old Braxton Overton Brown, owner of West Point Grocery in Cullman, Alabama, was abducted during a robbery at his store. Witnesses reported seeing Brown with Max Landon Payne, who had been at the store earlier that evening. Payne took Brown to a bridge over Crooked Creek, where he shot Brown twice in the face with a shotgun, resulting in Brown's death.
