In the summer of 2017, the tight-knit community of Cullman, Alabama, was shaken by the tragic death of a prominent local attorney. Stephen K. Griffith, a 73-year-old male, was killed on July 17, 2017, in what authorities described as a home invasion. The incident occurred at his residence on County Road 1301 in the Vinemont area. Griffith was a well-respected, third-generation trial lawyer who had practiced for 49 years and was a beloved husband, father, and grandfather.
The assailant
was identified as 45-year-old Patrick O. Walker of Jones Chapel. According to the Cullman County Sheriff, Walker went to the Griffith's home with the intention of killing the attorney. Walker, who had a history of mental illness, had become infatuated with Griffith and believed the attorney was connected to a legal case involving him from years prior, although authorities confirmed the two had no actual connection. After gaining entry to the home, Walker shot and killed Stephen Griffith.
Following the shooting of her husband, Stephen's wife, Jackie Griffith, engaged in a prolonged struggle with Walker. In an act of self-defense, she managed to kill her attacker. Authorities later confirmed that a gun was not used to kill Walker. Jackie Griffith sustained injuries during the ordeal and was hospitalized but was reported to be in good condition. The bodies of both Stephen Griffith and Patrick Walker were sent for autopsies.
The investigation into the incident concluded that it was an isolated event stemming from the assailant's mental health issues. The sheriff publicly lamented the failures of the mental health system in preventing such a tragedy. In the wake of his death, Stephen Griffith's family established a fund for the Cullman Area Mental Health Foundation to improve mental health care services in the county, honoring his memory by working to prevent similar events in the future. There were no arrests to be made as the sole suspect was killed during the commission of the crime.
