In a tragic turn of events, the search for a missing young man from Alabama came to a grim conclusion, revealing a story of betrayal and violence. Daniel Ray Osborn II, a 22-year-old male, was last seen by his family on February 3, 2018. Concern grew as days turned into weeks with no word from him. A significant break in the case came on February 20, when his car was discovered with a flat tire in a junkyard in Baileyton, intensifying the fears of his loved ones.
The search ended in heartbreak on March 26, 2018, when investigators, acting on an anonymous tip, unearthed his body buried in the yard of a residence in the Fairview community. An autopsy would later reveal that he had died from a gunshot wound to the back of his head.
The investigation quickly led to the arrests of two individuals who were reportedly friends with Osborn: Andrew Jacob Maresh, 19, and Tyler Stephen Hudson, 20. In a chilling twist, both young men had allegedly participated in the efforts to find Osborn, sharing posts on social media and joining a Facebook group dedicated to the search. They were both charged with murder and held without bond. The property where Osborn's body was found belonged to Maresh's grandmother, Susan Winton Smith. Andrew Maresh initially tried to place all the blame on Tyler Hudson, claiming Hudson was the one who shot Osborn after an argument. During the investigation and subsequent trials, it was revealed that after the murder, the defendants used Osborn's cell phone to mislead his family and friends into believing he was still alive. In October 2021, a jury found Andrew Jacob Maresh guilty of the intentional murder of Daniel Ray Osborn II. He was later sentenced to 99 years in prison. In June 2025, Tyler Stephen Hudson pleaded guilty to murder ahead of his trial and received a 25-year sentence for his role in the crime.
