Death by Force

John W. Sparks, the 15th Sheriff of Cullman County, Alabama, met his demise on July 20, 1919, during a prohibition raid in the downtown area of Cullman. He was 49 years old at the time of his death. Sparks and the Cullman Police Chief had gone to an apartment at the corner of East 1st Avenue and 3rd Street in search of a suspect.
