In the winter of 2000, in Huntsville, Alabama, the life of a young man was tragically cut short. Cedric Lamont Crutcher, a 17-year-old Black male, was fatally shot on Sunday, January 16th. The devastating event unfolded in the parking lot of the Northwest Church of Christ, a place of worship and community, as Cedric was leaving the services with his family.
On that fateful day, witnesses reported that Cedric's stepfather, 41-year-old Byron Bonner, was waiting in the parking lot.
An exchange of words occurred between the two before Bonner allegedly shot Cedric multiple times, with one of the shots striking the teenager in the back of the head. The shooting took place in front of onlookers, including other church members and children. Following the incident, Bonner fled the scene.
Cedric was rushed to a local hospital, but tragically succumbed to his injuries hours later. The motive for the shooting appeared to be linked to domestic issues, as it was reported that Bonner and Cedric's mother, Edna, were in the process of divorcing. It was also noted that law enforcement had been called to Edna's home earlier that same day due to Bonner's presence, and she had sought a restraining order against him.
After eluding authorities for nearly nine hours, Byron Bonner surrendered to law enforcement at the Jefferson County Jail in Birmingham, approximately 90 miles south of Huntsville. He was to be brought back to Huntsville to be formally charged with murder in connection with the death of his stepson.
