On the evening of March 15, 2018, a dispute that had been simmering for weeks erupted in deadly violence at the Westlake Apartments in Huntsville, Alabama, claiming the life of 23-year-old Devonte Lashun Bone. Bone was inside a vehicle at the apartment complex when the shooting occurred around 10 p.m. Another individual, a teenager, was also injured in the incident.
The investigation into the shooting quickly pointed to Demetrius Deshawn Childs, who was 22 years old at the time.
Authorities identified him as the suspect, stating that the shooting was the culmination of an ongoing conflict between Childs and Bone. In a significant development, Childs turned himself in to Huntsville Police on the evening of March 19, 2018.
Following his surrender, Childs was charged with capital murder, shooting into an occupied vehicle, and second-degree assault. The charges reflected the gravity of the incident, which resulted in one fatality and one injury. The arrest brought a swift, though not final, resolution to the initial phase of the investigation into Devonte Bone's death.
