On November 1, 1994, Deputy Sheriff Billy Joe Thrower, aged 41, of the Madison County Sheriff's Office in Alabama, was involved in a fatal incident while serving commitment papers alongside two fellow officers. The suspect, anticipating their arrival, had positioned himself with binoculars and a shotgun. Upon the officers' identification at the door, the suspect opened fire, resulting in the immediate death of Deputy Thomas Lewis and critically wounding Deputy Thrower.
