In the summer of 2008, a horrific act of violence cut short the lives of a Birmingham, Alabama family. On July 24th, 34-year-old Elizabeth McFarland Witherspoon, her husband Derrick Antonio Witherspoon Sr., and her two sons, 13-year-old Jerome McFarland and 11-year-old Justin R. McFarland, were found deceased in their home. The family had been shot to death, and in an attempt to hide the heinous crime, their house was set on fire.
Authorities investigating the quadruple homicide soon
identified two suspects in the case. Shaunasty Lowe, who was 18 at the time, and 19-year-old Steven Jamal Williams, both from the nearby city of Bessemer, were taken into custody. The two men were subsequently charged in connection with the brutal slayings of the Witherspoon family. The motive behind the killings was not immediately made public.
The case progressed through the justice system, with Shaunasty Lowe eventually facing trial for his alleged role in the deaths of Elizabeth, Derrick, Jerome, and Justin. The tragic loss of the entire family sent shockwaves through the Birmingham community, leaving friends and loved ones to mourn the senseless violence that had befallen them.
