On the night of September 30, 2008, 19-year-old Demarcus Lee Ferrell left his family's Roebuck apartment in Birmingham, Alabama, accompanied by a young man and woman. Shortly thereafter, reports emerged that Ferrell was being pursued by another vehicle, with occupants firing shots at the white Crown Victoria he was driving. Concerned for his safety, Ferrell's mother began searching the city that night, hoping to locate her son.
