In the early morning hours of January 5, 2019, a burst of violence in Birmingham, Alabama, claimed the life of 46-year-old Charles Robert Reese. A resident of the city, Reese was a victim of a fatal shooting that occurred near 16th Street and Avenue V.
Officers from the West Precinct responded to an alert of a shooting at approximately 4 a.m. and discovered a potential crime scene in the 2500 block of 16th Street. However, Reese was not at the location. He had been taken by a private vehicle to UAB Hospital. Despite undergoing surgery, he ultimately succumbed to his injuries.
An investigation into the shooting led authorities to identify 27-year-old Roderick King as a suspect in Reese's death. A murder warrant was issued, and King was taken into custody and booked into the Jefferson County Jail on January 18, 2019. In September of that year, a Jefferson County Grand Jury indicted King for murder, formalizing the charge against him in connection with the death of Charles Reese. Funeral services for Reese were held on January 11, 2019, at Olivet Monumental Baptist Church, with his burial at Oakland Memorial Gardens.
