On February 20, 1922, Deputy Sheriff Jesse G. Thomas of the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office in Alabama was fatally shot while serving a vagrancy warrant on a mentally ill individual. Accompanied by two fellow officers, Deputy Thomas approached the suspect, who unexpectedly opened fire, resulting in Deputy Thomas's death.
