On February 20, 1922, Deputy Sheriff Jesse G. Thomas of the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office in Alabama was fatally shot while serving a vagrancy warrant on a mentally ill individual. Accompanied by two fellow officers, Deputy Thomas approached the suspect, who unexpectedly opened fire, resulting in Deputy Thomas's death. In the ensuing confrontation, the officers returned fire, killing the assailant.
