On February 12, 2023, in Cranberry Township, Pennsylvania, 30-year-old Anthony Smith was fatally shot in his residence on Brandywine Drive. His girlfriend, Amanda Hughes, 26, contacted authorities, stating she had shot Smith following an alleged physical altercation. Upon arrival, police found Smith with multiple gunshot wounds; he was transported to Allegheny General Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Hughes informed investigators that Smith had been punching her in the face and head, prompting her to retrieve a pistol from her purse and fire several rounds in self-defense. She then fled to a neighbor's house and called the police. Officers noted Hughes had bruising and swelling on her right hand and a small abrasion with swelling under her left eye.
Despite Hughes' account, initial observations at the scene appeared to contradict her statements. Smith sustained five gunshot wounds: twice in the arm, once in the thigh, and twice in the back. Hughes was subsequently charged with criminal homicide and held in Butler County Prison without bail.
In the ensuing legal proceedings, Hughes' defense attorney argued that the shooting was an act of self-defense, citing a history of alleged assaults by Smith. The prosecution sought additional evidence, including text messages between Hughes and Smith's grandmother, to shed light on the relationship dynamics. As of November 2024, the trial has been delayed to allow time for further investigation, with Hughes remaining free on $100,000 bail.
