On March 23, 2019, 30-year-old Anthony Tolbert of Graysville, Alabama, was fatally shot in Birmingham's Smithfield community. The incident occurred around 8:40 p.m. near the intersection of Rev. Abraham Woods Jr. Boulevard and 1st Street North. Tolbert was standing in a mobile car wash area with several others when an unknown assailant fired into the group. While others fled, Tolbert collapsed in an alley and was found unresponsive by responding officers. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
