On a warm evening in Hammond, Indiana, on June 29, 2015, 16-year-old Lauren Calvillo was on the front porch of her home with family, including younger cousins and neighborhood children. What began as a peaceful night was shattered by the sound of gunfire. In a heroic act, Lauren pushed the children to safety, shielding them from the spray of bullets, but in doing so, was struck and killed.
Another innocent bystander, 33-year-old Christopher White, who was visiting family on the same street, was also shot and later died from his injuries.
The investigation into the senseless violence revealed that the shooting was not a random act but a calculated attack rooted in a bitter gang rivalry. Members of the Latin Counts street gang had targeted the 5500 block of Beall Avenue to retaliate against their rivals, the Latin Kings. The Latin Kings were holding a vigil in the area for a fallen member, and the Latin Counts saw it as an opportunity to strike. Lauren Calvillo and Christopher White were caught in the crossfire, unintended victims of a war they had no part in.
In the years that followed, law enforcement diligently pursued the individuals responsible for the deaths. The investigation led to the arrests of several members of the Latin Counts. A high-ranking member, Eduardo Luciano, was identified as the one who ordered the attack. In a significant blow to the gang's operations, Luciano was charged with racketeering conspiracy, drug conspiracy, and two counts of murder. Another key figure, Ivan Reyes, was also charged with the murders of Calvillo and White.
The legal process brought a measure of justice for the families of the victims. Several co-defendants implicated in the attack were convicted for their roles in the gang-related activities that led to the tragic loss of life. Ivan Reyes and another gang member, Jeron Williams, both pleaded guilty to racketeering conspiracy and admitted their involvement in the murders. In February 2024, Eduardo Luciano, the leader who orchestrated the shooting, was convicted and sentenced to life in prison for his role in the killings, ensuring that the man behind the senseless act of violence would be held accountable.
