In the early 20th century, the city of Birmingham was the backdrop for a mysterious and ultimately unresolved crime that resulted in the death of one of its own police officers. Officer Willis A. Smith, a 28-year-old male, was shot and killed on Tuesday, March 10, 1908. The incident that led to his death also left his partner wounded.
