In the early morning hours of August 5, 2022, the quiet of a Birmingham, Alabama neighborhood was shattered by the sound of gunfire. Responding to reports of a shooting in the 1900 block of Springlake Court at approximately 6:20 a.m., Jefferson County Sheriff's deputies arrived to a grim scene. There, in the driveway of a residence, they found 29-year-old Jordan Harley Maxwell suffering from a gunshot wound.
Paramedics worked quickly to provide medical aid and transported him to a local hospital, but his injuries proved to be fatal, and he was later pronounced deceased.
The investigation into the death of the young man, a father of four, began immediately. Detectives with the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office canvassed the area for evidence and spoke with potential witnesses. Their efforts led them to obtain surveillance footage from the vicinity, which captured an individual believed to be connected to the homicide. In an effort to generate leads, the sheriff's office released this video to the public, hoping someone would recognize the person shown and come forward with information that could help them piece together the events of that tragic morning.
Despite the release of the surveillance footage and a reward of up to $5,000 offered by Crime Stoppers of Metro Alabama for information leading to an arrest, the case has grown cold. No arrests have been made in connection with Jordan Harley Maxwell's death, and his killer remains at large. In the years following the shooting, the pain of his unsolved murder continues to be felt by his family. In May 2024, his mother, Barbara Maxwell, a member of the gun violence activist group 'What About Us,' made a public plea to the community. She urged anyone with any information, no matter how insignificant it might seem, to come forward and help bring justice for her son and closure to his grieving family. The investigation remains open, with law enforcement still encouraging the public to contact them or Crime Stoppers with any tips.
