Birmingham, Alabama – In the late hours of a September evening, the life of Courtney Demond Hughley, a 44-year-old Black man, was tragically cut short in a burst of gunfire. The incident unfolded on Friday, September 9, 2022, in the Titusville neighborhood of Birmingham.
Officers from the Birmingham Police Department’s West Precinct were dispatched to the 800 block of Eighth Avenue West shortly after 11 p.m. following a report of a person shot. Upon their arrival, they discovered Mr.
Hughley lying unresponsive in the roadway, suffering from an apparent gunshot wound. Birmingham Fire and Rescue Service personnel were also at the scene and pronounced him deceased.
The preliminary investigation suggested that the shooting may have stemmed from a domestic dispute that escalated into violence. Authorities believe this was not a random act and that Mr. Hughley was the intended target. The shooting was part of a particularly violent weekend in Jefferson County, during which five men were killed in separate incidents across three cities.
