On a summer evening in Birmingham, Alabama, a domestic dispute escalated into a tragedy that claimed the life of Jerry DeWayne Bailey. The 32-year-old Black man was found unresponsive with a gunshot wound in a grassy area on Richard Arrington Jr. Boulevard North on June 1, 2024. Birmingham Police and Fire and Rescue personnel arrived at the scene around 7:25 p.m., where Bailey was pronounced deceased.
The preliminary investigation by the Birmingham Police Department indicated that Bailey
had been involved in an altercation with his girlfriend, 28-year-old Jamela Melton. During the course of the argument, Melton allegedly shot Bailey. Following the incident, she remained at the scene and reportedly contacted 911 to report the shooting.
Melton was taken into custody by Birmingham police without incident. Detectives presented the findings of their investigation to the Jefferson County District Attorney's Office. Subsequently, a warrant was issued for Melton's arrest on the charge of capital murder. She was booked into the Jefferson County Jail, where she is being held without bond. Bailey's death marked the 55th homicide investigation in Birmingham for the year 2024.
