In the late-night hours of September 21, 2024, chaos erupted in Birmingham, Alabama's lively Five Points South entertainment district. A barrage of gunfire shattered the weekend atmosphere, leaving a scene of devastation outside a popular nightclub and cigar bar. When the shooting ceased, 27-year-old male Carlos De'Juan McCain was among the dead, one of four lives claimed in what would be described as a targeted and violent attack.
Seventeen other people were wounded in the indiscriminate firing.
Investigators arriving at the scene found more than 100 shell casings, evidence of the intensity of the assault. The Birmingham Police Department quickly theorized that the mass shooting was not a random act of violence but a calculated 'hit.' They believed at least one individual was the intended target, with the other victims, including McCain, caught in the deadly crossfire. The investigation also brought to light that McCain himself had been acquitted of a murder charge years prior, in 2017. Another victim in the shooting had also previously faced a murder charge that was later dismissed.
The search for those responsible led to a significant breakthrough in the case. In October 2024, police arrested 22-year-old Damien McDaniel, charging him with capital murder for the deaths of McCain and the other three victims. McDaniel also faced 17 counts of attempted murder for those injured in the mass shooting. Authorities described McDaniel as a suspect in numerous other homicides in the city, linking him and another man, 27-year-old Hatarius Woods, to a violent crime spree that accounted for roughly a third of the city's homicides over the summer. While police announced McDaniel's arrest for the Five Points South massacre, they indicated the investigation was far from over, as they believed multiple shooters were involved and others remained at large. A substantial reward of up to $100,000 was offered for information leading to the arrest and conviction of all individuals involved in the deadly event that took the life of Carlos McCain.
