On June 20, 2009, 22-year-old Kirwin Keritius King, an engineering student at the University of Alabama, was fatally shot on the 2500 block of Tempest Drive in the Powderly neighborhood of Birmingham, Alabama. His death was one of 72 homicides reported in Birmingham that year, contributing to a homicide rate of 32.0 per 100,000 residents.
