In the early hours of a Saturday morning in Birmingham, Alabama, the life of 31-year-old Demetrius Wright, a Black male, was tragically cut short. On August 22, 2020, what began as a physical altercation in the middle of a road would end in his death, leaving behind questions and a police investigation into the city's 66th homicide of the year.
Just after 2:00 a.m., a Birmingham police officer was alerted to a fight unfolding nearby.
When officers from the West Precinct arrived at the scene, they discovered Demetrius Wright inside a vehicle, wounded and disoriented. He was quickly transported to UAB Hospital for medical attention, but he ultimately succumbed to his injuries.
The initial stages of the investigation pointed toward a domestic dispute. Detectives believed Wright had been involved in a physical altercation with a woman in the roadway at the time he was fatally wounded. The Birmingham Police Department opened a homicide investigation into the matter.
In the days that followed, authorities encouraged anyone with information to come forward and contact the B.P.D. Homicide Unit or Crime Stoppers.
