On December 23, 2009, 21-year-old Kourtney A. Nichols was fatally shot in his Birmingham, Alabama apartment during a robbery attempt. He had moved into the apartment just four days prior to the incident. Two young men, one of whom knew Nichols, orchestrated the robbery. They attempted to deceive him into opening his door by providing a false name. When Nichols opened the door, they forced their way in, leading to the fatal shooting.
