On January 29, 2014, 65-year-old Michael Lynn Jenkins of Collinsville, Alabama, was fatally shot in the Mount Vernon community on Lookout Mountain. The DeKalb County Sheriff's Office responded to 911 calls from the residence of 35-year-old Christopher Todd Landers, reporting a shooting incident. Upon arrival, authorities found Jenkins deceased at the scene. Landers was detained and subsequently charged with murder in connection with Jenkins' death.
