In the early hours of a summer morning in Hueytown, Alabama, a dispute that began elsewhere would tragically end the life of 34-year-old Dwyer Koharrell Fields. On June 11, 2023, Fields, a Black male from Birmingham, was fatally shot in front of a residence on the 100 block of Fair Street. The incident, which marked Hueytown's first homicide of the year, occurred around 2:30 a.m.
Investigations revealed that the series of events leading to the fatal shooting started with an altercation between Fields and a woman at a different location in Birmingham. Following this initial confrontation, both individuals drove separately to the Fair Street address in Hueytown. It was there that the conflict escalated, drawing in a family member of the woman, 45-year-old Orlando Mayes. A dispute then erupted between Fields and Mayes.
During the course of the altercation, Mayes allegedly shot Fields. When law enforcement arrived at the scene, Mayes was still present. Dwyer Koharrell Fields was pronounced dead at 3:09 a.m. The case was later presented to a Jefferson County grand jury, which in October 2023, indicted Orlando Mayes on a charge of murder.
Following the indictment, Mayes was arrested and booked into the Jefferson County Jail. His bond was set at $40,000, and he was scheduled for an initial court appearance in March of 2024. Funeral services for Dwyer Koharrell Fields, who was born on July 15, 1988, in Selma, Alabama, were held on July 1, 2023, with his interment taking place the following day at Serenity Memorial Gardens.
