In the early hours of a Sunday morning, the life of 34-year-old Dwyer Koharrell Fields, a Black male from Birmingham, Alabama, was tragically cut short. On June 11, 2023, what began as a dispute at a location in Birmingham would tragically escalate and conclude in front of a residence on the 100 block of Fair Street in Hueytown. Fields and a woman had an initial altercation and then drove in separate vehicles to the Hueytown address.
The confrontation intensified at the Fair Street home,
drawing in a family member of the woman, 45-year-old Orlando Mayes. In the ensuing dispute, Mayes allegedly shot Fields. The shooting occurred around 2:30 a.m., and despite the prompt arrival of emergency services, Fields was pronounced dead at the scene at 3:09 a.m. Mayes did not flee and was still present when law enforcement arrived.
Following an investigation into the fatal shooting, the case was presented to a Jefferson County grand jury. In October 2023, the grand jury handed down an indictment against Orlando Mayes, charging him with murder in connection with Dwyer Fields' death. Mayes was subsequently arrested and booked into the Jefferson County Jail, with his bond set at $40,000. His initial court appearance was scheduled for March 2024.
