On May 18, 2014, 25-year-old Jonika Shaundria Smith of Marion, Alabama, was fatally shot by her boyfriend, 21-year-old Eric King Jr., at his residence in Sprott, Alabama. The incident occurred following an argument between the couple. After the shooting, Smith was transported by car to Vaughan Regional Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead. King was arrested and charged with murder; his bond was set at $1 million.
