On the evening of May 18, 1992, 30-year-old Candace Brown visited her parents' home in Birmingham, Alabama, to pick up her two-year-old son. Due to a burglary at her residence five days earlier, her mother and brother accompanied her back to her house to ensure her safety. After confirming that the house was secure, they departed around 9:00 p.m.
