In the quiet neighborhood of Woodland Park in Birmingham, Alabama, a heroic act on Father's Day in 2014 ended in tragedy. Arthur Mills, a 53-year-old Black male, was fatally shot on Sunday, June 15, 2014, in the 1800 block of 3rd Place Southwest. Remembered as a beacon of light and an angel in his community, Mills lost his life while attempting to protect an elderly neighbor from a robbery.
The incident unfolded when Mills witnessed three men attempting to rob the woman who lived across
the street. Without hesitation, he intervened in an attempt to stop the crime. During the confrontation, one of the assailants opened fire, striking Mills. The community was left in shock and mourning for the man who was described as someone who would help anyone in any way he could. His actions were hailed as heroic, and a vigil was held in his honor where friends, family, and neighbors gathered to remember him.
In the wake of the shooting, the Birmingham Police Department launched a homicide investigation. Their efforts led to the identification and arrest of suspects. Freddrious Nelson, a 26-year-old Black male from Birmingham, was taken into custody, and a capital murder warrant was issued against him with no bond. Another individual, 22-year-old Devarious McGee, was also arrested and faced charges of capital murder, robbery, and attempted murder. At the time of McGee's arrest, authorities stated they were still searching for two other individuals connected to the fatal robbery. Funeral services for Arthur Mills were held on Saturday, June 21, 2014, at the First Baptist Church of Ensley, with his burial in Oakland Cemetery.
