On June 5, 2016, 22-year-old Brett Allen Kimbrel of Bessemer, Alabama, was fatally shot while traveling on Interstate 20/59 near mile marker 113. Kimbrel was a passenger in a black Ford Mustang driven by Abby Hyman, who also sustained injuries during the incident. The shooting stemmed from an earlier dispute in Brighton, Alabama. Hyman identified the shooter as "G," later revealed to be Roderick Jerome Johnson of Hoover. She subsequently picked Johnson out of a six-person police lineup.
