On a summer evening in 2016, a dispute that began in Brighton, Alabama, tragically escalated, culminating in the death of 22-year-old Brett Allen Kimbrel of Bessemer. On June 5, 2016, Kimbrel was a passenger in a black Ford Mustang traveling on Interstate 20/59 near mile marker 113. The driver of the Mustang, Abby Hyman, was also in the vehicle.
Their journey was violently interrupted when another car, a white Chrysler 300, began to pursue them.
The driver of the Chrysler, later identified as Roderick Jerome Johnson of Hoover, opened fire on the Mustang. The barrage of bullets struck both occupants of the Mustang. Brett Allen Kimbrel was fatally wounded, shot in the head, while Abby Hyman sustained injuries to her arm and hand.
In the aftermath of the shooting, Hyman was able to identify the shooter as a man she knew as 'G'. She later picked Roderick Jerome Johnson out of a six-person police lineup. Johnson was subsequently arrested on June 10, 2016, and faced serious charges for his alleged actions. He was charged with capital murder in connection to the death of Brett Allen Kimbrel and attempted murder for the injuries inflicted upon Abby Hyman. Following his arrest, Johnson was held in the Jefferson County Jail without bond.
