Detective Frank Childress, a 42-year-old officer with the Bessemer Police Department in Alabama, succumbed to gunshot wounds on November 7, 1912. The incident occurred on November 1, 1912, when Detective Childress and another officer were inside a pawn shop on Second Avenue in Bessemer's business district. They were there to follow up on an unrelated investigation when the owner alerted them to a man attempting to pawn an expensive watch.
